Venice Beach, LA California

Since Jay and I are trying to get our frequent flyer miles we took a crazy course to Puerto Rico. We went from Cincinnati, Detroit, LA, New York, then San Juan. He booked the flight to LA separately so that left us with a 9 hour layover in LA. My Dad took me to LA when I was little and I don't really remember it but after talking with him he reminded me that Venice Beach Boardwalk is about a 15 minute drive from the airport. We made the decision to rent a car for half a day instead of taking a taxi. We chose the cheapest one available and if you top off the gas tank before you return it and bring a receipt they will refund you for it.  At the end of the day it ended up costing about $40.00 which I thought was a good deal especially because we were able to leave our luggage in the car, walk around and get some fresh ocean air!

I had not really planned this out at all so we had no idea where we were going. My GPS took us to Washington street (which turned out not to be the right place.) There were a few restaurants, a pier and a beach so I was happy. We saw some sea lions when we walked out to the pier and it was fun to watch the surfers. The place we ate at was nothing special I actually forget the name of it. The server was kind of bitchy and they food was just OK so there was no point to blog separately about this restaurant.

Between the restaurants and the pier there is a long walk way so we went to explore walking towards where we saw the most people. As we were walking we saw all of these amazing apartments/condos/houses that over looked the ocean. They had to be like million$ plus houses seriously some of them were insane!! I got inspired and started taking a bunch of pictures. Jay and I were comparing what I liked and what he liked and just enjoying the fresh air.

All of a sudden we started seeing Venice Beach Physicians dressed in green jail suits handing out flyers to get your medical marijuana license! Little souvenir shops, outdoor workout gym and lots of crazy people. That's when I realized THIS is the real Venice Beach. As we walked farther you started seeing hundreds of homeless people along with crazy street vendors selling all kinds of random stuff. There are tons of people playing all different styles of music. I remember I looked into the distance and saw this girl facing the beach with her ukulele just looking so peaceful and happy. Turned around and saw a lady playing a PIANO with a cat sitting on top! The farther you walk the more chaotic and worse it gets. I felt a little intimidated so I stopped taking pictures after the houses :( People just come up to you and put things in your hands and then ask for money its pretty ridiculous. There are people on skateboards that roll through and just don't care, there are people singing as loud as they can with their headphones on and there are people who pee right in front of you! (watch your step)

My word of advice is that you use the restroom before entering the hysteria of Venice beach because there is probably a reason people don't pee in the public restrooms I could smell them when we walked past. You will also smell, weed, cigars, stinky people and fish.

Rent a bike or skates fairly cheap and get some exercise!! I am more of a walker.

The lady playing the Piano! We tried to ask her how she got it there but she ignored us. It's hard to see but she has a cat sleeping on the top left of the piano.

Bottom line--->
This was a great stop. I really enjoyed this because it felt like we got an extra vacation out of our vacation! It only cost $40 for the car and we got to experience something new. It's only 20 minutes from LAX so it was the perfect getaway from the stale air of the airport. We didn't chance it with the traffic though and left for LAX about 4:00 PM and had very light traffic and no wait in the security line at the airport. If you are flying Delta make sure you get some good food in you before getting to the airport!! Delta terminal has the WORST food choices!! Even the McDonald's sucks there!!
